How to get up early in the morning?

23 Feb, 2023 | 🕐 Reading time: 5 minutes

1. How often have you heard that majority of the successful people wake up before the sun rises and because of that they have completely transformed their lives – living a healthier life, earning more, being better at relationships and many more.

Not only that, there have been hundreds and thousands of books and videos explaining why and how to do the same and yet we fail to do this one thing that seems so important and simple but turns out to be quite difficult to pull it off.

Approaching it the wrong way 😴

2. Before I tell you how I get up in the morning everyday, it’s important for you to know why do you want to get up because inspiration and motivation fades away quite quickly, as it already did a couple of times when you tried it, didn’t it?

3. If we don’t have a strong ‘why’, we’ll get back to sleep the moment our alarms wake us up. It is not an external desire but an internal process.

This was the issue with me for all the years when I couldn’t get up early. It was only after realising how beneficial it’ll be to wake up early, my routine actually changed.

I was never a morning person and even though I tried a couple of times, I failed every time.

Why I decided to wake up early? ☕️

4. I decided because I realized my old routine was hurting me more than it was benefiting me.

I used to get up at odd hours of the day, getting bombarded with already late work, be it studying or extra-curricular and by the time I was ready for the day, the day used to be over.

If we are aware enough to think from our conscious mind, rather than being drifted through life using our subconscious only, we may realize that our routine is a guide to our day-to-day life.

5. Our routine must benefit us than harm us. Once being aware, there were key pointers that I started noting when observing myself for a few days. Those were:

  • I was spending a lot of time, effort, and mental resources in just deciding what to do for everyday tasks such as when to take shower, what to eat, and at what time to sleep. You get the point, right?
  • Most of my days used to go past right in front of me putting out fires rather than planning and doing something meaningful and long-lasting
  • I was getting run by the day instead of me running the day
  • The desire to live up to my full potential knowing that there are more successful people than me out there who have a better way of doing things
  • A couple of times when I did manage to get up early, I loved the calmness, the unchaotic day, following our ancestral roots and realizing it might be better to be morning person – witnessing sun rising, getting up at the dawn and wrapping up my day by dusk
  • The freedom I felt and the mental space I had was next to nothing. It was like taking control of my life

Finally, how to do it 🌞

6. Assuming we are alike, there must have been striking relatability in the points I mentioned above.

Once we realize why we want to do it along with the general proven benefits that it has, we will have no internal conflict amongst our body, emotions and thoughts. Hence nothing stopping us now.

7. The only thing left is how to do it. The best suggestion that I would give to you which changed my way of approaching this task is that the best morning routine starts the night before.

It’s not possible to sleep late and wake up early on your own. We can’t sleep at 3 am in the morning and expect to wake up fresh at 6 am in the morning.

8. For once you’ll have to forcefully wake up early because you can’t force yourself to sleep early a night before.

And for a couple of days you’ll need to sacrifice your productivity to some degree because you need to fight the urge to not sleep during the day.

For a week you might feel exhausted and that’s completely all right. That is how it is supposed to be.

We need around 7-8 hours of sleep. If we want to wake up at 6am, it is only common sense to realise we need to be on bed by 10ish.

"Anchor just one thing in life, and our whole life will be sorted"

9. Create a list of pre made tasks to perform in the morning and the consequences if you fail to do the same. This is the most crucial part of the process, if not done, we’ll end up going back to sleep the second after our alarms wake us up.

I keep my phone in the opposite corner far from the bed so that I’ve to get off the bed to turn it off. Also, I just have one alarm now, rather than 10s of them like before.

This ensures that I wake up full and final. Failing to wake up by this will result in my day getting lost.

Ps. You can have a couple of them if there are some events or deadlines such as a flight or booking (just to ensure you don’t end up sleeping through).

10. A couple of times when I actually failed to wake up, I punished myself by not doing the tasks altogether that I was supposed to do in those missed hours.

Such like I didn’t go to the gym later the day and didn’t have any beverages which I was supposed to have had in the morning.

This resulted in me felling like crap and in turn making stronger decision to follow these the next day otherwise this feeling of regret and loss will return. I have this simplified analogy that if I win the morning, I win the day.

But one of the most important thing to keep in mind is to keep room for errors. At the start and even later down the road, there will be times when you won’t be able to follow the routine because of many reasons (surprisingly there are many!) such as family functions, heath issues, mood wings etc.

That’s why it is crucial to have room for errors. Even if we miss the streak, that doesn’t mean we have to give up altogether. Even if we fail a couple of times, remember the quote “fall seven times, stand up eight” which means to never give up.

We are what we do most of the times”.
